How it works

Between the last troughing idler and the pulley the belt changes from troughed to flat. If this transition is too short, the belt edges are stretched beyond their rating — or, with a raised pulley, the centre goes slack and can buckle. Creases at the head and failed wing-roll bearings at the first full-trough idler are typical symptoms.

Beckley’s closed-form method (1982) gives the minimum length for three equal rolls from the trough angle, the belt modulus, its rated tension and the tension at that pulley. Raising a head pulley to the optimum height shortens the transition considerably.

Formula

h = (w/3) sin β;   optimum lift h1 = (w/3) tan(β/2)
Recommended limits: th = 1.05 tr;  tl = 0
Pulley at belt line: Lt = (h / cos(β/2)) · max{ √[E / 3(th − tt)],  √[E / 6(tt − tl)] }
Pulley at optimum height: Lt = (h1 / cos(β/2)) · max{ √[E / 6(th − tt)],  √[E / 3(tt − tl)] }
Transition idlers (belt line): βn = 2 asin[ sin(β/2) · (1 − (Pn/L)²) ]

Worked example

Inputs: Pulley position = optimum ; Belt width w = 1000 mm; Trough angle β = 35 °; Belt modulus and rated tension = steel ; Belt strength tu = 1000 N/mm; Belt modulus E (belt maker) = N/mm; Rated tension tr (belt maker) = N/mm; Belt tension at this pulley = 150 kN; …or tension per width = N/mm; High limit (× tr) = 1.05 ratio; Low limit = 0 N/mm; Transition idler pitch = mm.

  1. ST 1000, 1000 mm, 35°; 1982 ratios: E = 65 × 1000 = 65 000 N/mm, tr = 0.15 × 1000 = 150 N/mm
  2. Head tension 150 kN → tt = 150 N/mm; th = 157.5 N/mm; optimum lift h1 = 105 mm
  3. High-tension limit governs: Lt = 4,188 mm (4.19 × w)
  4. Tail at the belt line with tt = 0.2 tr: 3,810 mm
  5. Beckley’s rationalised table: 4.2 w (head, optimum height) and 3.8 w (tail, belt line) for 35° steel cord.

Questions

How long should a head transition be?

For a 35° troughed steel cord belt with the head pulley raised to the optimum height, Beckley’s table gives about 4.2 × the belt width.

Why raise the head pulley?

At the optimum height the edges and centre are stressed equally, so the transition can be much shorter — about 2.6 times shorter at full rated tension.
