How to select a conveyor belt: step-by-step workflow
Start with the duty, then select the carcass, cover and splice as one compatible system.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Duty
Record capacity, bulk density, lump size, moisture, inclination, lift, length, starting duty and operating temperature.
Carcass
Select strength and construction from calculated operating and transient tensions, splice efficiency and the required design safety factor. Check impact resistance, troughability and elongation.
Geometry
Confirm minimum pulley diameters, transition distances, idler spacing and take-up travel with the belt supplier.
Approval
A cover-grade recommendation does not specify carcass strength. Obtain supplier approval for the complete belt and splice specification.
