Conveyor drive and gearbox overheating: causes and checks
Use load, temperature and lubrication evidence together. A hot housing is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Record the load, ambient temperature, noise, vibration and temperature trend when overheating begins.
Evidence
Check lubricant grade and level, leaks, cooling airflow, alignment and abnormal conveyor resistance using approved inspection methods.
Causes
Incorrect or degraded lubricant, misalignment, sustained overload, restricted cooling or worn internal components can generate excess heat.
Verification
Use OEM alarm limits and compare like-for-like operation. Follow the approved trip response for rapid temperature rise, smoke or loss of lubrication.
Action
Isolate before mechanical work. Correct the confirmed cause and verify temperature after a controlled restart; do not defeat thermal protection.
