Conveyor chute spillage and choking: causes and checks
Investigate material flow and transfer geometry before tightening skirts against the belt.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Record where spillage starts and whether blockage follows wet material, oversize lumps or a throughput change.
Evidence
Inspect chute lining, loading direction, skirt clearance, impact support and any failed blockage sensor under isolation.
Causes
Unsuitable flow geometry, worn liners, material changes, poor skirt condition or a restricted opening can cause blockage and spillage.
Verification
Compare material properties and flow with the transfer design. Treat a plugged chute as stored energy; material can release suddenly.
Action
Use an approved blockage-clearing procedure. Correct flow restrictions and centred loading; excessive skirt pressure accelerates cover wear.
