Conveyor belt top cover wear: causes and checks
Map the wear pattern and remaining cover before deciding on repair, replacement or a different compound.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Distinguish uniform abrasion, local gouges, longitudinal grooves, impact cuts and exposed carcass.
Evidence
Take repeatable cover-thickness readings at marked positions. Record material, drop height, belt speed, skirt pressure and cleaner condition.
Causes
Abrasive material, high transfer impact, unsuitable compound, chemical ageing or persistent rubbing at skirts and structure can remove cover.
Verification
Compare measured thickness with the supplier discard limit and check for internal damage. A linear wear forecast is unreliable after changes in material or loading.
Action
Correct the source of wear. Select replacement cover using impact, abrasion, chemical and thermal requirements together.
