Conveyor belt mistracking: causes and how to fix it
Find the pattern before adjusting the conveyor. A belt that wanders under load needs a different investigation from a splice that drifts once per revolution.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Record whether drift occurs empty, loaded, at one fixed location, or with the same section of belt. Observe only from designated guarded positions.
Evidence
Mark the affected belt section only after isolation. Record loading position, buildup, idler alignment, pulley squareness and splice geometry. Photograph from a safe position.
Causes
Check off-centre loading, displaced idlers, a skewed splice, pulley misalignment and an unlevel structure. The PDF ranks these as field checks; the order is not a measured probability for your plant.
Verification
Compare empty and loaded tracking after a controlled restart. A fault that travels with the belt points toward belt or splice geometry; a fixed-location fault points toward structure, loading or rotating components.
Action
Stop for edge contact, tearing or unsafe spillage. Isolate all energy and secure take-up movement before corrections. Restore centred loading and alignment before considering training idlers.
