Conveyor belt splice failure: causes and checks
Opening edges, exposed reinforcement or a lifted splice require a controlled stop and specialist assessment.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Inspect for lifted edges, cracking, exposed cords, fastener movement or a repeated tracking disturbance at the splice.
Evidence
Review splice materials, cure records, geometry, service tension, pulley diameters and exposure to heat or chemicals.
Causes
Poor preparation or bonding, incorrect fasteners, skewed geometry, moisture ingress and cyclic bending can degrade a splice.
Verification
Have the splice inspected using the belt manufacturer method; superficial cover repair does not restore damaged carcass strength.
Action
Isolate and secure stored energy. Use an approved re-splice or replacement plan and document the repair and acceptance inspection.
