Premature conveyor idler failure: causes and checks
A seized idler can abrade the belt, raise local temperature and increase resistance.
Safety first: observe a running conveyor only from designated guarded positions. Isolate, lock out and verify zero energy, and secure take-up movement, before any hands-on check or correction.
Symptom
Observe abnormal noise, a stationary roll, shell wear or elevated temperature from an approved safe inspection point.
Evidence
Record idler position, operating hours, contamination, impact loading, alignment and seal condition after isolation.
Causes
Seal ingress, corrosion, unsuitable bearings, impact overload or installation defects can shorten idler life. Lubricate only serviceable idlers according to the OEM instructions.
Verification
Compare temperature and vibration trends under similar load and ambient conditions; one hot reading alone does not identify the root cause.
Action
Replace unsafe idlers under isolation. Correct ingress, loading or specification problems and retain the failed part for analysis.
